About
Tropical Photography
Tropical
Photography is a name chosen by Dan Inmon to showcase his
photographic talents. The name was chosen because of the
area in which he is located, Clearwater, Florida, is a semi-tropical
area. Palm trees, flowers, and beaches are a large part
of the outdoor scenic areas that Dan has to choose from
for his location shooting. The fact that this sun shines
almost every day of the year, makes it an ideal location
for a photographer interested in the depiction of beauty,
both scenic and human.
Dan,
like many other photographers, began his photographic career
at an early age. His first paying photographic job was in
1960, when he used a plastic Imperial 620 box camera and
exchanged a photograph of a neighbor for an apple. He followed
this pattern of bartering by photographing High School sporting
events with a Yachica-Mat and a flash that had no battery.
This was done in exchange for the affections of his girlfriend,
the yearbook editor. This bartering continues today, with
the exchange of studio time for prints with aspiring models.
He went on to be photographer, cartoonist and writer for
his College newspaper in the early 70's.
In
1976, Dan began a part-time career doing real estate, news,
surveillance, glamour, and portfolio work in Birmingham,
Alabama. Employed at the time by the Alabama Department
of Public Safety, he learned the care that must be taken
in dealing with photos as evidence. Covering a Celebrity
Benefit Concert in 1980 allowed hum to take advantage of
the experiences of his past career as a musician. Dan developed
his techniques of photographing entertainers on stage. He
received several magazine assignments, of which two became
covers for the Alabama State Police Magazine.
Dan
began shooting last minute photos for a "For Sale by Owner"
real estate magazine. Because of the deadlines involved
in this grueling schedule, he bought darkroom equipment
and began processing his own black & white film and prints.
This opened new creative doors, but an unfortunate allergy
to the chemicals put a quick end to this new-found skill.
He now uses commercial labs for all his processing, but
the software and computers available today make it easy
for him to again enjoy the creative aspects of post production
on his images.
A
move to Tallahassee, Florida in 1981 resulted in Dan opening
his first real studio, doing Fashion, Glamour, Entertainment,
and Commercial Photography. He moved into doing more commercial
product work, and received several commissions for products
resulting in newspaper and catalog ads. He soon became involved
in shooting runway shows for the Florida State University
School of Fashion Design and seasonal fashion shows at local
malls.
Dan
became the "official" photographer for several Men's Clubs,
where he honed his skills in photographing the female form.
His experience in this area made him aware of the requirements
of location photography, and allowed him to develop lighting
and posing techniques to take advantage of existing backgrounds
and a minimal amount of equipment and still attain the desired
results.
Dan's
daughters became the main focus of his life. Amanda was
a natural model and began doing runway shows at the age
of two. Some of her pictures were the featured photos in
his portfolio. A divorce in 1988 made the job of raising
two daughters alone a primary occupation, causing the photography
to again take a back seat.
The
tragic loss in a fire, of all equipment, film, negatives
and prints from a long career, caused Dan to re-think his
photography career. For several years, he put his energies
into other forms of expression, but always felt the open
area in his life. In April, 1998, he rented a studio in
Clearwater, Florida and began the adventure again.
Dan
is again involved in glamor, entertainment, and model photography.
With his affiliation with The American Association for Nude
Recreation and the Naturist Society, he is also providing
quality photography for nudist and naturist events and clubs.
Knowing the concerns of the nudist and naturist lifestyle,
Dan can provide a unique service not often found in professional
photography. Photos taken in 1997 were published in the
Bulletin of the American Association for Nude Recreation,
and resulted in Dan receiving the 1998 Rick Athearn
Photography award, an annual award for nudist photography,
from the American
Association for Nude Recreation.
In 2001 Dan joined several other professionals and a created
new venture to combine services in media productions, providing
services in photography, videography, post-production, graphic
design, website design, printing, music composition, arranging,
production, recording and publishing, using their own state
of the art in-house studio facilities.
Working
independently again, exclusively with professional grade
Nikon digital cameras, Tropical
Photography is now equipped with the necessary
equipment to provide any photographic service.
